2025 Calendar - Photography Nights and Workshops
Tuesday, January 21st: Subjects beginning with the letter “K” + Open.
Kangaroo, Koala, Karen, Kelvin, Kaffir, Karaoke singer, Kaolin, Khaki, Kirin, Knee, Knoll, Knife, Kite etc.
Tuesday, February 18th: Framing Scenes + Open + Lens Presentation.
Open discussion about how you angled, framed and cropped the scene.Frames can be used to showcase the subject and create a sense of depth in the photo. Take into account the angle of your camera, light and shadow, position of foreground & background elements. Consider elements to “frame in” your subject such as trees, branches & bushes, buildings, archways, doors, windows etc.
LEARNING ABOUT LENSES – EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOP (Information and slide show)
Lenses - which focal length should you use? Some shared experiences with use of compact, superzoom and DSLR cameras incorporating information about standard zoom (kit) lenses, prime & close-up lenses, superzooms, wide-angle and telephoto lenses. Material will also be presented about the impact of lens limitations and camera settings on photography. Including ND filters.
Tuesday, March 18th: Out of Place + Open. Things that shouldn’t be where they are.
What constitutes out of place/odd-one out is up to the photographer. Subjects could range from inanimate to human, in any sort of environment, in the wrong place, looking wrong or leaving the viewer to figure out why it is there in the first place. Manipulated or surrealistic images may also be included.
Tuesday, April 15th: Wildlife / Insects + Open.
Wildlife or insects in the natural environment rather than captivity. Consider use of depth of field, composition and lighting together with elements of the subject such as and colour, strength, beauty and dignity. Consider also using design elements such as triangles or other shapes when taking your photo.
PRESENTATION BY GUY DRAPER, SVALBARD.
Tuesday, May 20th: Tracks, Roads and Paths + Open.
Use tracks, roads, or paths as an element of composition and or display their physical appearance. Perhaps consider shapes to imply perspective, lines to suggest distance, winding to entice the viewer to roam around the image or guide them to the focal point of the image.
Tuesday, June 17th: Minimalism or Negative Space + Open
Type of image-making that relies on simplistic compositions, heavy use of empty (negative) space and elimination of clutter. Generally, features some form of main subject (positive space) kept to a minimum within-the-frame surrounded by empty space. Consider your angle of view, foreground, background, and distracting elements. Add negative space intentionally to add vibrance to the subject or to invoke the feelings of isolation, solitude, relaxation, or significance to your image. Maybe try using long exposure to simplify the image.
PRESENTATION BY LOU MARAFIOTI
(Either bird or portraiture photography – club to decide at January meeting). Educational judging by Lou – scores not so relevant, more a critique and how the photos could be improved or why they don’t rate so well.
Tuesday, July 15th: Super close-up / Guess the object + Open
The intention of the exercise is not so much macro photography as getting in closer to remove context. Think creatively, consider angle of view, lighting etc. to produce ‘close-up’ photo of subject displaying some detail, but excluding the ‘broader context’ to challenge the viewer about subjects’ identity. Perhaps a photo of a portion of some every-day or larger objects photographed with normal or telephoto length lens?
Tuesday, August 19th: Architecture + Open
Photos that primarily showcase the exterior or interior of manmade structures. Different buildings may look better during different weather conditions and at different times of day. Consider these variables along with angle of view. It all comes down to the story you want to tell. E.g. (old, new, structural qualities, symmetry, details, lines, patterns, contrast etc.)
Tuesday, September 16th: Artistic / creative expression + Open
Use your skill and imagination to go beyond the basic photographic representation of a scene or subject. Express you vision, feelings, and message artistically. Create intriguing images in a way that others might understand, appreciate or find meaning in. Perhaps: Use and then break down composition techniques, a unique perspective, play with light, colour & contrast, patterns & textures, simplicity/stillness, visual puzzles, experiment with movement, get creative with your focus, sharpness or blur.
Tuesday, October 21st: Silhouettes + Open
Highlight the outline of the subject against a bright background, reducing the subject to a dark or black shape without detail. Consider positioning subject directly in front of a light source, e.g. the sun during sunrise or sunset, manual mode to underexpose the subject or adjusting the exposure compensation to a negative value. Perhaps tell a story, evoke emotion, a sense of mystery or drama through the interplay of light and shadow.
Tuesday, November 18th: Clouds + Open
Try to make clouds the main element of composition in your photo. Consider exposure and lighting conditions (sunrise, sunset, before and after storms etc.) and the effect on mood/drama, along with cloud geometry. Use of a polarizing filter may help separate the clouds from the sky and darken the sky.
Tuesday, December 9th: Monotone vs Colour + Open - End of year nibbles
Same photos in both monotone and colour with discussion around what works best for the subject. Think about different tonality within the image to make the black and white image ‘pop’.
Please note December meeting will be 1 week earlier to keep it further away from Christmas.
Planned outings / photo walks & events for 2025.

-Still dependent on them getting Raptors to the boat after the move from Mannum.
